This iron keel weighs 1800 kilograms and was firmly mounted below the wooden keel of the pilot boat «Frithjof», built by Colin Archer in 1891 for pilot Thor Andersen at Ula.
An iron ballast keel and a deeper hull were parts of Archer’s development of the traditional south-eastern Norwegian double-ender boat in the 1880’s. These reforms made the pilot boats more seaworthy.
